Principles of Coaching sport – Level 3

What is this course about?

This course is designed to give you qualifications and practical skills directly applicable to sport and recreation. The main themes of the College Diploma are sports coaching, sports leadership, working with children and fitness instructing.

The course is made up of a diverse range of modules that form the College Diploma in Sports Coaching. A variety of learning styles are developed and include formal classroom lessons, group work, presentations, individual tutorials and practical coaching sessions. All students are encouraged to find voluntary work in sports coaching. In addition to your main programme, you will study English and maths. Depending on your grades on entry you will study either Functional Skills or GCSEs English and Maths.

Course Content

Students have the opportunity to achieve the following -

  • Sports Leaders UK Level 3 Higher Sports Leaders Awards (HSLA) – 30 UCAS points Includes Level 2 Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA), Event Management, Disability Sport and First Aid Training
  • 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Multi-Skills Development in Sport
  • 1st4sport Level 3 Award in the Principles of Coaching Sport
  • 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in PE and School Sport
  • CYQ Level 1 Award in Fitness and Physical Activity
  • CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing
  • NGB Coaching Awards in Different Sports (includes FA Level 1 Award in Coaching Football)
  • Safeguarding of Children Training

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs (grades A* - C) or equivalent plus one year’s coaching experience and a Satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)* enhanced check. *Please note there is a charge of £44 for a DBS check. Students starting this course must be a minimum of 17 years of age.

Course Progression

As the College Diploma is a diverse combination of various awards it is not nationally recognised in its own right (although each individual award is). The opportunity may exist for students to progress onto Higher Education. The extra UCAS points available may enhance a university application.

Career Opportunities

Opportunities for employment are within the sport and recreation sector, particularly in sports facilities, schools and sports coaching organisations. The modules on the course are recognised nationally in the sport, leisure and recreation field, providing students with very comprehensive curriculum vitaes (CVs).
