Principles of Coaching Sport – Level 1

Who is the course for?

The qualification is awarded by 1st4Sport qualifications and has been developed with guidance from Skills Active and Sports Coach UK, to support people who have an interest in coaching sport. This qualification can be used to support the achievement of a variety of sport-specific coaching programmes and is an ideal starting point for an aspiring coach or to supplement existing coaching practices and gain a nationally recognised coaching practitioner qualification.

The 1st4Sport Level 1 Principles of Coaching Sport has been developed to provide learners with an appropriate knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of coaching sport, the principles of planning coaching activities in sport, the principles of conducting coaching activities in sport and the principles of evaluating coaching activities in sport.

Learners are required to be aged 14 years or over, prior to registration to enrol on this particular course.

What will I study on the course?

The 1st4sport L1POCS can only be achieved via a 1st4sport recognised centre and is segmented into units that place appropriate emphasis on the following major components:

  • Understanding the fundamentals of coaching sport
  • Understanding the principles of planning coaching activities in sport
  • Understanding the principles of conducting coaching activities in sport
  • Understanding the principles of evaluating coaching activities in sport.

The qualification is designed to be delivered via a mixture of tutor-delivered sessions, directed activities and evidence gathering for assignments via the combination of:

  • Attendance at an induction that will provide learners with an introduction to the qualification and guidance on its requirements, including evidence gathering and assessment
  • A course of training that will deliver the knowledge required via a structured programme of learning covering all four units of the qualification
  • Assessed components, including the completion of assignments/tasks covering all units within the qualification.

The course offers you a combination of Blended Learning which will allow you to work at your own pace and complete practical set assessments and course work within a supportive and fun teaching and learning environment.

Entry Requirements

You should be at least 14 years old and have a passion to coach and instruct within Sport. The course contains specific theoretical units involving distance learning and self-study so a keen interest and motivation in understanding the principles of coaching will be vital. For all assessment activities you will need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear to be able to conduct a safe, appropriate and professional coaching session.


It is an ideal starting point for those wishing to coach within a sports club environment or want to pursue a career within Sports Coaching. The demand for qualified sport coaches is increasing rapidly and it is a career that offers the chance to work flexibly to suit your needs. On course completion you will gain the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in the Principles of Coaching Sport and can progress into National Governing Body sport specific coaching qualifications.
