International Womens Day

Tue, March 08, 2016

As a nod to International Women's Day 2016, we would like to introduce you to one of our Learners - an inspirational hard-working young woman who undertook an Advanced Apprenticeship with us at CSL.

Renae Henry-Kemp was among many other young people who applied for what became her role as an Active Apprentice working with the LLDC. Having recently been offered a full time permanent contract to continue in her role, which is based at The Olympic Park in Stratford, we’d like to wish Renae all the best for her future career!

We met up to find out a bit more about her experiences as an apprentice, and she told us:

“I’m based in the Olympic Park for my apprenticeship and working for the LLDC. I’m studying towards an advanced Sports Development qualification and a lot of my role covers administration, finance, project support, communications, monitoring and evaluating. I applied on the National Apprenticeship website as one of 85 people. This was then shortlisted to 40 and I got through to the teamwork activity. This was shortlisted again to 6 people and I received a call back that I got the job!

This was my first ever job! It was my first interview too and has been a big step into adult life, going from College to working in an office was a huge change of scenery for me.

I started when my daughter was 6 months old and luckily I was supported by the team and they were considerate where my daughter was concerned.

My course workload is large but my tutor arranged frequent meetings to make sure I was up to date and to maintain a balance. Everyone at CSL supported me and I wasn’t left on my own to cope. I’ve had help from my Functional Skills tutor too and I passed my English exam the second time.

I’ve been taken on by my employer now doing the same role as during my Apprenticeship but they are going to start giving me more training on the financial side of things so I can develop new expertise. Learning new skills has been my biggest achievement so far!”
