Meet the learner: Coaching Traineeship

Fri, April 15, 2016

In partnership with Southend United Community Education Trust, CSL offer Traineeship programmes to help people aged 16-24 get a taste of what it would be like to work in a real life football Coaching environment, whilst gaining a few coaching qualifications including FA Level 1, and brushing up on math and English skills.

Drawing to the end of the 12 week programme he took part in, Georgie was able to reflect on what he'd enjoyed and learned from the course:

"I enjoyed the work experience and independence of having my own group. Getting some groups engaged was a challenge though I took turns with Jay to talk to some of the group on their own whilst rest of the group played matches, which was really helpful. My Traineeship built up my confidence, I’m the sort of person who likes to throw themselves into the deep end with things and because of it I now feel confident to lead a group and warm ups.

The facilities and support have been good, I feel like Laurie is my tutor as well as my friend and he’s very knowledgeable. I was able to apply things he taught me such as health and safety and visual checks to do right by my participants. I found it good to be demonstrating rather than just talking to the group and managed to control the group. Someone asked to be paired with a friend and I said no to challenge them which he didn’t like at first but told me after he was pleased to have worked with new people.

There were more girls than boys in my group which was a new experience for the boys and I took the opportunity to play as a magic man to encourage some of the smaller girls to take off with the ball!"
