What is the course about?

The Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF) extends the work-related focus of the Edexcel Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF). There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in a particular vocational sector and it is suitable for those who have decided that they wish to enter a specific area of work such as an educational environment.

The Edexcel Level 3 qualifications in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

(QCF) have been developed to give learners the opportunity to:

  • Engage in learning that is relevant to them and which will provide opportunities
  • To develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes
  • Essential for successful performance in working life
  • Achieve a nationally recognised, Level 3 vocationally-related qualification

The Diploma is made up of 11 mandatory units and learners will have a range of different units to study which will complement their work based learning, such as:

  • Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults
  • Schools As Organisations
  • Understand Child and Young Person Development
  • Understand How to Safeguard the Wellbeing of Children and Young People

Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF), together with optional units covering specialisms such as supporting literacy and numeracy development, supporting a curriculum area, behaviour support, additional support needs for example gifted and talented, special educational needs, bilingual support/ English as an additional language, pastoral and welfare support, examination invigilation, extra-curricular activities, working with parents, learning guide, induction mentor, team leadership.

What could this qualification lead to?

Successful completion of qualifications in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools can lead to working in educational settings such as nursery, infant and primary schools, also after school clubs and sports coaching.

What does this qualification cover?

This qualification covers the essentials of specialist support, allowing the learner to develop the skills and knowledge required in an educational setting. This Teaching course is designed for students who wish to gain an advanced understanding of the principles and practice of the Teaching/Classroom Assistant roles. Students may be completely new to the role of Teaching Assistant, may already be working in the classroom or they may already have completed a level 2 course.

How is the course assessed?

The majority of the course is assessed internally through assignments complete over the first and second years. These might be work based projects or written research assignments.
